Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, alongside New Jersey State Athletic Control Board Commissioner Larry Hazzard, Sr., announced additional funding for youth boxing programs in Trenton and Atlantic City. The Ike Williams Boxing Academy in Trenton will receive $65,000 to continue its program, which began last year. This initiative provides boxing knowledge, physical fitness training, and instruction on nutrition and life skills to 20 youth participants. Sessions are held three times a week for three hours each.
In Atlantic City, the Police Athletic League (AC PAL) will also receive $65,000 to support its youth boxing program that started in July 2019 but was interrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. AC PAL expects to engage 20 youths referred by various community organizations and services.
“These programs transcend boxing and can have an impact far beyond the ring,” said Attorney General Platkin. He emphasized the benefits of learning interaction skills and exploring career paths while maintaining physical fitness through sports.
Commissioner Larry Hazzard noted that "The Ike Williams program was selected after several Trenton police officers, former Department of Corrections officers, and firefighters committed to participating." This involvement aims to foster positive interactions between young participants and first responders.
The Ike Williams Boxing Academy focuses on keeping youth out of the criminal justice system while helping those with prior contact reduce recidivism. Participants are encouraged to achieve academic success with regular assessments conducted to identify their needs.
AC PAL's after-school program serves youths aged 11-18 from disadvantaged neighborhoods in Atlantic City. The funding supports daily activities at the AC PAL Recreation Facility aimed at building self-esteem and providing a safe space for positive engagement.
Both programs target participants from high-crime areas offering mentorship during after-school hours as healthy alternatives.
