Governor Phil Murphy has issued Executive Order No. 368, mandating that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff on Monday, October 7, 2024. This action commemorates the one-year anniversary of the terrorist attack on Israel by Hamas and acknowledges the ongoing humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.
The attack occurred on October 7, 2023, during Shabbat and Simchat Torah, when Hamas launched an assault on Israel. The incident resulted in nearly 1,200 civilian deaths and over 240 abductions. A year later, more than 97 individuals remain captive in Gaza, including at least six Americans and Edan Alexander from New Jersey. Israel continues to face threats from groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah as well as Iranian missile attacks.
The conflict has led to significant casualties across Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon. Approximately 90% of Gaza's civilian population has been displaced due to the violence. Governor Murphy emphasized that safeguarding innocent civilians is crucial for deescalating tensions and achieving stability.
New Jersey hosts substantial Jewish, Israeli American, Muslim, Palestinian American, and Lebanese American communities. Governor Murphy stated: “One year after the tragedies of October 7, 2023, we continue to mourn the devastating losses and urge all parties to reach an agreement that immediately returns every hostage and puts an end to the continued suffering of civilians in Israel, Gaza, and throughout the region.” He added: “Our hearts go out to the families that have been shattered by the terrorist attacks on October 7th and the humanitarian suffering that followed, and we continue to pray for a swift end to the war and restoration of peace across the region."
