On October 1, a significant dockworker strike commenced along the eastern United States, spanning from Maine to Texas. This marks the first large-scale strike of its kind in 47 years. Members of the International Longshoremen's Association are advocating for improved wages and working conditions.
Governors Phil Murphy, Kathy Hochul, Maura Healey, and Wes Moore issued a joint statement emphasizing the importance of reaching an equitable agreement. "It’s critical for USMX and the ILA to reach a fair agreement soon that respects workers and ensures a flow of commerce through our ports," they stated.
The governors also highlighted their collaboration with the Biden-Harris Administration in monitoring potential price gouging during this period. They cautioned companies against exploiting the situation to gain unfair profits at the expense of working families. "We want to state clearly that we, along with the Biden-Harris Administration, are closely monitoring for incidences of price gouging," they warned.
Efforts are being made to maintain essential supplies in medical facilities and grocery stores nationwide. "We will continue to closely coordinate to ensure that critical supplies are available at medical facilities and grocers across the country," said the governors.
