New Jersey is grappling with historically low precipitation, above-average temperatures, and worsening water supply conditions. Governor Phil Murphy and DEP Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette announced a Drought Warning for the state, urging the public to conserve water. The announcement came during a virtual press conference as New Jersey battles a significant increase in wildfires due to dry conditions affecting the Northeast.

Since early October, the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has responded to 537 wildfires, marking a more than 1,300% rise compared to last year. This includes the Jennings Creek wildfire on the border with New York, which resulted in the death of New York State parks system employee Dariel Vasquez. In response to these conditions, mandatory statewide Stage 3 fire restrictions remain in place.

Commissioner LaTourette authorized the Drought Warning designation following a prolonged period of dry weather. "New Jersey is experiencing unprecedented weather conditions—as a result of climate change—that require us to take these precautionary measures now," said Governor Murphy.

Acting Governor Tahesha Way introduced Bringing Veterans Home (BVH), an initiative by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs and Department of Military and Veterans Affairs aimed at housing over 1,000 homeless veterans. More than $30 million has been allocated for this effort over two years. "We must always take the time to express our gratitude and honor the bravery and selflessness of our veterans," said Acting Governor Way.

Additionally, Governors Phil Murphy and Kathy Hochul announced a proposed reduced fare program for customers with disabilities using the PATH system. The program offers a 50 percent fare reduction similar to that available for senior riders. "Public transportation is crucial to our disability community," stated Governor Murphy.

The Port Authority continues its efforts to enhance the PATH system through initiatives like the PATH Improvement Plan and PATH Forward program, focusing on capacity increases and reliability improvements.
