Acting Governor Way has ordered that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff on November 19, 2024, to honor the late Senator Jim Wallwork. The directive was issued through Executive Order No. 371.

Senator Wallwork passed away on October 23, 2024, at the age of 94. He is survived by his daughter Lyric Winik, two grandsons Nathaniel and Evan, and nephews Matt and Mark Sheeleigh with their families.

Wallwork had a distinguished career before his legislative service. He served as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army and spent over ten years in the New Jersey National Guard, retiring as a major. His political career began in 1963 when he entered public office. He served in the General Assembly from 1964 to 1966 before moving to the State Senate where he held roles such as Senate Minority Whip and Assistant Minority Leader.

He was known for championing environmental protections like the Pinelands Preservation Act and authored legislation for New Jersey’s first Advanced Life Support ambulances. Additionally, Governor Christine Todd Whitman appointed him as Commissioner on the Waterfront Commission of New York Harbor.

“Senator Wallwork was a dedicated public servant who served with integrity,” stated Acting Governor Way. “We offer our deepest condolences to his loved ones and we thank him for his years of dedicated service.”
