The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board (SACB) has introduced a new sports betting policy aimed at ensuring fairness and integrity in combative sports. The policy, which is effective immediately, targets unethical betting practices within the industry.
SACB Commissioner Larry Hazzard Sr. emphasized the importance of this move by stating, "With this action, we are safeguarding the integrity of combative sports events. By implementing these standards, we are sending a clear message that unethical behavior will not be tolerated in New Jersey’s combative sports industry."
The policy affects various board officials such as inspectors, timekeepers, judges, referees, and physicians. It also includes board members like the chairman and employees including the commissioner and deputy commissioner. Promoters and participants are encouraged to align their policies with these standards.
Key aspects of the policy include restrictions on betting for officials, members, and employees both locally and globally. While legal betting on non-combative sports is permitted under local laws, illegal betting through unauthorized platforms is banned outright.
Prohibited conduct outlined in the policy includes match-fixing and misuse of insider information. Additionally, board personnel cannot work for sportsbooks or related entities.
Promoters and participants must avoid any actions that could compromise event integrity. They are required to report any violations immediately to the SACB Commissioner.
Training sessions for board personnel have been mandated to ensure compliance with these new rules. Violations can lead to disciplinary measures such as fines or license suspensions or revocations.
