Earlier today, Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin convened a meeting with law enforcement leaders, LGBTQ+ community leaders and allies from across the state, and members of the Department of Law and Public Safety leadership team to address security concerns ahead of Pride celebrations in New Jersey.
"I use the word privilege to describe this meeting intentionally," Platkin stated. "It was of course a privilege to be around the table with so many dedicated advocates, colleagues, and friends committed to improving systems of government and public safety for not only members of the LGBTQ+ community but for all New Jerseyans."
Platkin emphasized that such gatherings are supported at every level of government in New Jersey. "It is a privilege because that is not true in every state in this great Union," he noted.
While there are no specific threats to New Jersey at this time, Platkin acknowledged ongoing threats against LGBTQ+ communities globally. "We know that these threats give rise to fear and concern in all communities, but especially for members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community looking forward to participating in Pride celebrations – and we are taking these concerns seriously," he said.
In response, Platkin has directed New Jersey law enforcement to take specific steps to enhance awareness and safety planning around upcoming Pride events. He reassured the community: "I am working tirelessly to make sure that New Jersey Pride is safe, and all those celebrating feel safe."
Residents and visitors should expect an increased presence of law enforcement around Pride celebrations as a precautionary measure. "We are taking these steps in an abundance of caution to ensure that these celebrations remain safe and joyful," Platkin explained.
Platkin urged organizers who have not yet contacted their local Police Chief or County Prosecutor to do so promptly. He assured them that state, county, and local law enforcement agencies are prepared to support their events.
"Stay safe and happy Pride," Platkin concluded.
