Governor Murphy Unveils Fiscal Year 2025 State Budget Focused on Affordability and Economic Opportunities

Governor Phil Murphy presented his vision for the Fiscal Year 2025 state budget, emphasizing the goal of making New Jersey the best place to raise a family. In his annual budget address, Governor Murphy highlighted key priorities aimed at expanding affordability, maintaining fiscal responsibility, creating economic opportunities, and ensuring a brighter future for all New Jersey residents.

Governor Murphy expressed his commitment to improving the lives of New Jerseyans by stating, “this budget will ensure that New Jersey retains its proud reputation as the best place, anywhere, to raise a family.” He emphasized the importance of delivering tax relief, lowering healthcare and housing costs, and creating opportunities for future generations.

New Jersey State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio commended the budget, stating, “this budget continues the Governor’s commitment to making New Jersey an affordable place to work, raise a family and retire.”

The proposed $55.9 billion spending plan includes significant investments in various areas, including direct property tax relief, school funding, and initiatives to support NJ TRANSIT. Notably, the budget allocates over $3.5 billion in direct property tax relief, with a focus on providing support to working and middle-class families.

In the education sector, Governor Murphy's budget prioritizes funding for public schools, with a $908 million increase in K-12 aid. The budget also includes provisions for universal pre-K, teacher training programs, and initiatives to support children's health and nutrition.

Furthermore, the budget proposes a new dedicated funding stream for NJ TRANSIT through a Corporate Transit Fee, ensuring continued support for the transportation agency as ridership recovers from the pandemic.

Governor Murphy's commitment to fiscal responsibility is evident in the proposed budget, which includes a fourth consecutive full pension payment of $7.1 billion. The budget also features a surplus of $6.1 billion and initiatives to reduce debt and support public sector employees.

In line with the Administration's focus on economic growth, the budget includes investments in innovation, clean energy, and small businesses. Initiatives such as the AI Moonshot, electric grid modernization, and support for workforce development aim to position New Jersey as a leader in these sectors.

Overall, Governor Murphy's FY2025 budget proposal seeks to build a stronger and fairer New Jersey, offering opportunities for all residents to achieve a better future.
