New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, along with attorneys general from 22 other states, has filed a motion for a preliminary injunction in the ongoing case New York v. Trump. The lawsuit challenges actions by former President Trump and various federal agencies that attempted to pause or withhold nearly $3 trillion in federal assistance funding allocated to the states. This funding supports essential programs and services across the country.
The coalition previously obtained a temporary restraining order and is now seeking to extend this relief to prevent further attempts at imposing a funding freeze. These funds are crucial for public services such as education, healthcare, infrastructure projects, and environmental protection.
Attorney General Platkin stated, "The lawsuit filed by New Jersey and other states yielded a swift ruling from the Court that the Trump Administration cannot freeze funding for education, basic healthcare, law enforcement, and basic infrastructure." He emphasized the need for continued court intervention due to ongoing withholding of funds critical for reducing energy costs and supporting infrastructure in New Jersey.
Without access to federal financial assistance, many states could face cash shortfalls affecting programs like Medicaid and Head Start. The motion aims to ensure rapid disbursement of these vital funds.
The legal action involves attorneys general from Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, North Carolina, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island Vermont Washington Wisconsin as well as the District of Columbia.
