New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin has joined a group of 11 attorneys general to caution federal employees about the Trump administration's "deferred resignation" program. The initiative promises continued pay until September 30, 2025, for those who resign by February 6.
"New Jersey is home to tens of thousands of federal workers who serve our country with honor and dedication—and who are increasingly being targeted by the Trump Administration," stated Attorney General Platkin. He added that "President Trump has allowed an unelected billionaire with no constitutional authority to intimidate the civil servants who keep our government running in an attempt to push them out of their jobs."
On January 28, the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) informed millions of federal employees via email about this new program. The offer included ongoing pay and benefits along with exemption from in-person work requirements until September 30. A follow-up email on January 30 reiterated the offer, encouraging employees to seek employment outside the government and warning that staying could result in job loss.
Unions representing federal employees have advised against accepting this offer. The American Federation of Government Employees cautioned its members that acceptance does not guarantee promised benefits. Similarly, the National Federation of Federal Employees warned its members about potential risks.
The attorneys general from Arizona, California, Connecticut, Delaware, Hawaii, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington have joined Platkin in alerting federal workers.
