Governor Phil Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 366, mandating that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff from August 27 to August 28 in honor of the late United States Congressman Bill Pascrell Jr. The order coincides with memorial services scheduled for these dates.

Congressman Pascrell passed away on August 21, 2024. He is survived by his wife, Elsie; his children, Bill, David, and Glenn; and six grandchildren. His political career began in 1996 when he was elected to represent New Jersey's former 8th Congressional District. In 2012, he continued his service representing the state's 9th Congressional District. Before joining Congress, Pascrell served in the United States Army and Army Reserve and worked as an educator. He also held positions in the New Jersey General Assembly and served as mayor of Paterson.

During his public service career, Congressman Pascrell was recognized as a staunch advocate for his community. Governor Murphy stated, "Congressman Bill Pascrell was an unwavering champion for New Jersey’s most vulnerable residents." Murphy added that Pascrell was dedicated to "economic opportunity, better access to affordable health care, and fairer tax policies for families across America."

Governor Murphy expressed condolences on behalf of himself and his wife Tammy: "Tammy and I extend our condolences to his loved ones and are forever grateful for his extraordinary life of service."
