Governor Murphy has expressed his sorrow over the recent deaths of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau. The brothers were killed while biking in Oldmans Township, New Jersey. In a statement, Governor Murphy said, “Tammy and I are heartbroken by the shocking and tragic loss of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau.”
The Gaudreau siblings were known for their contributions to hockey. They grew up in New Jersey and pursued their passion for the sport at Boston College, where they became standout players on the men's hockey team. After college, Johnny Gaudreau played in the NHL, most recently with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He was admired by fans worldwide, earning him the nickname "Johnny Hockey." Governor Murphy noted that Johnny was recognized as "a star in every sense of the word—both on and off the ice."
Matthew Gaudreau dedicated himself to nurturing young athletes' talent after playing in both the AHL and ECHL leagues. He returned to South Jersey to coach at Gloucester Catholic, his alma mater.
Governor Murphy extended his condolences to the Gaudreau family: “To every member of the Gaudreau family, please know that the people of New Jersey grieve with you.” He also sent prayers to Johnny’s wife Meredith and their children Noa and Johnny; Matthew’s wife Madeline; as well as their parents Jane and Guy, and sisters Katie and Kristen.
