Governor Phil Murphy expressed sorrow over the death of Congressman Bill Pascrell, highlighting his contributions to New Jersey and public service. In a statement, Murphy and his wife Tammy conveyed their grief: “Tammy and I are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend Congressman Bill Pascrell, a giant of New Jersey and a lifelong champion for our most vulnerable neighbors.”
Murphy reflected on Pascrell's roots in Paterson and how his upbringing in an Italian American family shaped his dedication to community service. "He grew up in a tight-knit Italian American family that instilled in him a tireless work ethic," said Murphy.
Pascrell's career spanned various roles including history teacher, adjunct professor, serviceman, Mayor of Paterson, State Assembly member, and notably as a Congressman for 27 years. Murphy noted Pascrell’s efforts in Congress: “For many New Jerseyans, Bill will be remembered most fondly for leading the fight for our families...”
His Congressional tenure was marked by advocacy for reproductive health care access, gun violence prevention, law enforcement support, and environmental protection.
Murphy concluded with condolences to Pascrell's family: “We send our heartfelt condolences and prayers to his wife, Elsie, as well as their three children — Bill, David, and Glenn — and six grandchildren.”
