Governor Phil Murphy and NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett presented the latest generation of multilevel rail cars at an event in Kearny, New Jersey. The new fleet aims to enhance reliability, capacity, and comfort for commuters.

Governor Murphy emphasized the importance of modern equipment for improving infrastructure: “Providing modern, reliable equipment is a critical component to improving New Jersey’s infrastructure, particularly with regard to public transit.” He noted that these upgraded rail cars will expand access to reliable transportation for NJ TRANSIT riders.

Senator Cory Booker highlighted the benefits of the 174 new multilevel rail cars: “This investment to modernize our transit system along the busiest rail corridor in the country will encourage more New Jerseyans to opt for public transit over driving.”

Senator George Helmy remarked on Governor Murphy's commitment since taking office: “These Multilevel III cars propel us into a new generation of NJ TRANSIT.”

Congressman Rob Menendez acknowledged ongoing partnerships with federal and state leaders: “Commuters deserve the best possible experience when traveling through our region.”

Michael Culotta from the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) expressed support for NJ TRANSIT's initiative: “The FTA is proud to support NJ TRANSIT as it introduces 174 new multi-level railcars into service.”

Assemblyman Clinton Calabrese discussed sustainability goals: “These electric, self-propelled vehicles should not only enhance capacity and comfort but also significantly enhance mechanical reliability.”

NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin S. Corbett praised collaborative efforts: "NJ TRANSIT is grateful to Governor Murphy, the New jersey legislators and our partners at the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) for delivering the necessary funding."

David Van der Wee from Alstom commented on their contribution: "Alstom is proud to help meet the vision and leadership of Governor Murphy and NJ TRANSIT President & CEO Kevin Corbett."

The first of 174 Multilevel III cars were previewed during an event at NJ TRANSIT’s Meadows Maintenance Complex. These vehicles include amenities such as USB charging ports and onboard information displays. Manufactured by Alstom Transportation in Plattsburgh, NY, they promise improved mechanical reliability compared to older models.

The Multilevel III Power Cars are Electric Multiple Units (EMUs), making them self-propelled without needing separate locomotives. They are unique in North America.

In December 2018, NJ TRANSIT approved a procurement award for 113 Multilevel III vehicles from Bombardier Transit Corporation (now Alstom Transportation Inc.). Additional purchases were approved in February 2022 and July 2024, bringing the total number of new cars to 174 since 2018.
