The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability has disclosed the identities involved in a fatal shooting on November 3, 2024, in Haddon Township, Camden County, New Jersey. The deceased civilian was Keith Edelin, aged 46, from Pennsauken, New Jersey.

The preliminary investigation states that the incident occurred around 1:07 a.m. when Haddon Township Police Department officers responded to a 9-1-1 call about an attempted burglary at an apartment complex on West Crystal Lake Avenue in Westmont. Upon arrival, Officer Luke Falkenberg and his partner encountered Mr. Edelin armed with a knife in the stairwell.

During the interaction, Officer Falkenberg discharged his service weapon, hitting Mr. Edelin. Officers administered medical aid until emergency services arrived and transported him to Cooper University Hospital where he was pronounced dead approximately one hour later. A knife was recovered at the scene; no officers were injured.

Under a law enacted in 2019, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), the Attorney General’s Office is mandated to investigate deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement or while individuals are in custody. These investigations must be presented to a grand jury to decide if evidence supports indicting any involved officers.

The investigation continues with no further details released currently.
