The Attorney General's Office is currently investigating a fatal shooting involving a police officer in Haddon Township, Camden County. The incident occurred on Sunday, November 3, 2024, in the Westmont section of the township and resulted in the death of an adult male civilian. The identities of both the deceased individual and the involved officer have not been disclosed.

Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 1:07 a.m., officers from the Haddon Township Police Department responded to a 9-1-1 call reporting an attempted burglary at an apartment complex on West Crystal Lake Avenue in Westmont. Upon arrival, officers encountered a man armed with a knife in the stairwell. During their interaction, one officer discharged his service weapon, hitting the male. Officers provided medical assistance until emergency personnel arrived and transported him to Cooper University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead about an hour later. A knife was recovered from the scene.

This investigation is being conducted under a 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), which mandates that any death occurring during an encounter with law enforcement must be investigated by the Attorney General’s Office. The findings are required to be presented to a grand jury to decide if there is sufficient evidence for an indictment against any officers involved.

The investigation remains ongoing, and no additional information has been released at this time.
