The Attorney General's Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) has released the identities of those involved in a fatal shooting that occurred on October 19, 2024, in Pemberton Township, New Jersey. The deceased individual has been identified as Marvin Taylor, 57, from Browns Mills, New Jersey.
Preliminary reports indicate that a 911 call was made at 3:22 p.m., reporting smoke coming from a residence. Emergency responders from the Pemberton Township Volunteer Fire Department and police officers from the Pemberton Township Police Department arrived at a residence on Woodland Avenue in the Browns Mills section.
Upon arrival, officers were informed of an armed individual in the backyard, later identified as Mr. Taylor. Officers took positions in the wooded area behind the property and attempted to persuade Mr. Taylor to disarm. An exchange of gunfire ensued between Mr. Taylor and Officer Kyle McQueen of the Pemberton Township Police Department. Mr. Taylor was hit during this exchange.
First aid was administered to Mr. Taylor before he was airlifted to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was pronounced dead at 5:36 p.m. A firearm was found near Mr. Taylor following the shooting. No injuries were reported among officers or other civilians present.
In compliance with a 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), which mandates investigations into deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement officers or while individuals are in custody, this case will be reviewed by a grand jury to assess whether there is sufficient evidence for an indictment against any officer involved.
