The Attorney General’s Office of Public Integrity and Accountability (OPIA) is conducting an investigation into a fatal police-involved shooting that took place on October 19, 2024, in the Browns Mills area of Pemberton Township, New Jersey. The identity of the deceased, an adult male, has not been disclosed. Authorities reported that a firearm was found near the body.

Under a 2019 law, N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), the Attorney General’s Office is mandated to investigate deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement officers acting in their official capacity or while the individual is in custody. This law requires that such investigations be presented to a grand jury to decide if there is sufficient evidence for an indictment against any involved officer or officers.

Currently, the investigation remains active and no additional information has been released.
