Philip John Holmes and Yueh-Lin (Lynn) Loo, both professors at Princeton University, have been elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE). This announcement was made on February 11. The NAE membership is a prestigious recognition in the engineering field.
Holmes, an emeritus professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, was honored for his work on nonlinear analysis and chaotic dynamics applied to engineering systems. His research has contributed significantly to understanding complex systems such as turbulence and brain functions. Holmes has also co-authored textbooks on dynamical systems and chaos theory.
Loo, a professor of chemical and biological engineering, was recognized for her contributions to organic electronics and decarbonizing shipping. Her work focuses on developing cost-effective solar-cell technologies using organic materials. As the founding CEO of the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation in Singapore, she has led initiatives to reduce carbon emissions in international shipping.
Additionally, four Princeton alumni were elected to the NAE's 2025 class: Marsha Anderson Bomar, Susan L. Brantley, Pei Cao, and Marian Gindy.
Anderson Bomar is known for her efforts in sustainable transportation systems. Brantley has contributed to understanding hydrogeologic processes at Pennsylvania State University. Cao is noted for advancements in web caching and search engine efficiency at YouTube Trust & Safety. Gindy has innovated pharmaceutical product development at Merck.
The 2025 class includes 128 members along with 22 international members.
