Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman, a member of the U.S. Congress representing New Jersey’s 12th district, has been vocal about her opposition to recent budget proposals put forth by Republicans. Through a series of tweets, she outlined her concerns regarding the potential impact of these budget cuts on communities across the nation.
On February 13, 2025, Rep. Watson Coleman expressed her concern over proposed budget cuts by stating that they would affect all communities, not just Democratic districts. She emphasized this point in a tweet: "When we say these cuts will hurt our communities - we don't mean just Democratic districts, we mean ALL of our communities." She also provided an analysis of how these cuts could negatively impact Republican voters as well.
The following day, on February 14, 2025, Rep. Watson Coleman announced that she had submitted an amendment aimed at protecting the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) from being dismantled under the GOP's budget plan. In her tweet, she highlighted the agency's effectiveness: "I just submitted an amendment to the GOP's budget rip off that would protect the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from being dismantled." She noted that the CFPB had returned $21 billion to consumers with a relatively modest budget.
Later on February 14, Rep. Watson Coleman reported that her amendment was voted down by Republicans in Congress. She expressed disappointment in another tweet: "Republicans just voted down my amendment to prevent the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau from being defunded." Her message underscored concerns for working families while pointing out perceived benefits for large financial institutions.
