Former New Jersey Supreme Court Justice Alan Handler passed away on May 23, prompting Governor Phil Murphy to order flags at half-staff in his honor. In a statement, Governor Murphy remarked on Handler's significant contributions to New Jersey law and public life. "Justice Handler was a giant in New Jersey law," said Murphy. Handler served from 1977 to 1999 and was known for his role in the Abbott v. Burke case, which reformed school funding distribution.

In other developments, Governor Murphy announced the opening of the Union County Veterans Service Office, ensuring that veterans across all 21 counties have access to vital services. This fulfills a promise made in the Fiscal Year 2024 budget. “New Jerseyans who have answered the call to serve deserve our utmost respect and support,” stated Governor Murphy.

The state is also advancing its offshore wind solicitation schedule by moving the fifth solicitation forward from Q3 2026 to Q2 2025. This move aims to boost economic benefits and job creation in New Jersey's offshore wind industry. NJBPU President Christine Guhl-Sadovy emphasized the importance of this initiative for economic and environmental progress.

Furthermore, Human Services released the NJ Age-Friendly Blueprint alongside a $5.5 million grant program aimed at improving communities for older adults. “These important strategies and best practices will help us ensure that New Jersey’s communities are age-friendly,” commented Governor Murphy.

Lastly, eleven school districts in New Jersey will receive over $12 million from the EPA's Clean School Bus Program rebate competition to transition to clean school buses. This initiative aligns with efforts to reduce diesel emissions and improve air quality for students.
