Governor Phil Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 359, mandating that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff on Friday, May 31, to honor the late Justice Alan B. Handler. Justice Handler passed away on May 23 and is survived by his three daughters, step-children, nieces, and nephews.

Justice Handler served on the New Jersey Supreme Court for 22 years, during which he authored numerous opinions. Before his tenure on the court, he held several significant positions in state government. These included roles as Chief Counsel to Governor Byrne, First Assistant Attorney General, and eight years as a Superior Court Judge with three of those years spent in the Appellate Division.

Governor Murphy commented on Justice Handler's impact: “Justice Handler was essential in transforming New Jersey's judiciary into the envy of the nation.” He further noted that during his time on the court, Justice Handler was seen as one of its intellectual leaders who contributed to elevating the Wilentz Court to national prominence. Governor Murphy added that Justice Handler was cherished by colleagues for his humor, curiosity, and determination.

The executive order serves as a formal gesture of mourning and recognition for Justice Handler’s contributions to New Jersey’s legal landscape.
