The College of New Jersey's Board of Trustees has announced the establishment of the Michael Bernstein and Patricia Harp Scholarship Fund. This initiative was introduced to honor Michael Bernstein on his inauguration as TCNJ's 17th president.
The scholarship fund aims to assist talented students with financial needs who transfer into the college from other institutions, whether they are two-year or four-year colleges. Rebecca Ostrov, chair of TCNJ’s Board of Trustees, stated, “Knowing that Michael and his partner, Patti, put a premium on educational opportunity and access, we couldn’t think of a more appropriate gift.” She added that the fund is intended to grow over time and provide long-term support for future students.
President Bernstein expressed his gratitude for this gesture by saying, “I am deeply grateful for the board’s generosity." He further shared insights about Patricia Harp's impact on education: "Patti never had the opportunity to attend college, yet having spent over 35 years in universities she had a powerful, enduring respect for education and the opportunities it provides."
Harp passed away recently due to complications from Alzheimer’s Disease. In her memory, Bernstein has requested donations be made to this scholarship fund instead of sending flowers. Contributions can be made online by selecting “President Michael A. Bernstein Endowed Fund” in the donation menu.
Supporting scholarships has been an ongoing focus for President Bernstein at TCNJ. In August, he participated as the final donor in the college’s "50 in 50" scholarship drive, which emphasized support through various forms such as one-time gifts and endowed funds under the "For the Love of Lions" campaign.
