Governor Phil Murphy announced the appointment of George Samir Helmy to the United States Senate, following the resignation of Senator Robert Menendez. Menendez, who was found guilty on all charges in a legal process that concluded with his decision to resign effective August 20th, will be replaced by Helmy temporarily.
Murphy stated, "Here in America, and especially here in New Jersey, we do not reward leaders when they violate the public trust. We replace them with public servants who are worthy of high office." He emphasized the importance of accountability for leaders who break the law.
Helmy's appointment comes at a time when political division is prevalent across the nation. Murphy highlighted Helmy's extensive experience, noting he is "the longest-serving gubernatorial chief of staff in state history" and has previously served as state director to Senator Cory Booker and worked with late Senator Frank Lautenberg.
The Governor praised Helmy's ability to provide constituent services and navigate government complexities. He said, "George understands, on a fundamental level, how a U.S. Senate office operates. And he will be ready to run this office from day one."
Helmy will serve until New Jersey voters elect their next U.S. Senator on November 5th. Murphy confirmed he had informed both Democratic nominee Congressman Andy Kim and Republican nominee Curtis Bashaw about this temporary appointment.
Murphy expressed confidence in Helmy as a caretaker for the Senate seat: "You will never find a person who has served others so well." He added that Helmy’s integrity would help restore public trust in leadership.
The Governor also acknowledged Helmy's historical significance as an Arab American senator: "As the proud son of two Egyptian American immigrants... George will also make history as the only Arab American Senator serving in the 118th Congress."
Helmy’s tenure will last until election results are certified later in November. At that point, Murphy plans to appoint the election winner before year-end.
Murphy concluded by thanking Helmy for his willingness to serve temporarily and urged New Jerseyans to participate in November’s election: "I thank every single one of you who will cast your ballot... for continuing our great democratic tradition."
