In a pioneering move, New Jersey is reaching out to its workforce for insights on generative artificial intelligence. The state's Artificial Intelligence Task Force aims to gather feedback from workers about their expectations and concerns regarding the technology. This initiative will help shape the Task Force's recommendations to Governor Phil Murphy.

The survey, accessible at NJ.gov/aisurvey, invites residents to share their views on the challenges and opportunities AI presents in the workplace. "There is no question that Generative AI has the potential to transform our society and impact workers across industries – not just those in the tech sector," stated Governor Murphy. He emphasized that this effort will ensure residents' voices influence policy decisions related to AI.

The survey will remain open until August 7, 2024, utilizing All Our Ideas, a platform developed in New Jersey. Participation is anonymous and can be done via mobile or computer.

Beth Simone Noveck, New Jersey's Chief AI Strategist, highlighted the importance of understanding worker perspectives: "Change is coming with Generative AI and workers will be on the frontlines... By better understanding what workers hope artificial intelligence can accomplish and what they are wary of, we can help create a more empowering work environment."

Chris Rein, State Chief Technology Officer and Co-Chair of the AI Task Force, noted: “As we work to leverage AI’s enormous potential, we must also safeguard our values... With this survey, we are making sure to include the voices of those directly impacted by artificial intelligence.”

Tim Sullivan, CEO of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority and Co-Chair of the Task Force praised the initiative: “New Jersey’s talented workforce has long been a key to our economic success... I commend the AI Task Force for wisely seeking their input on how this technology could impact the workplace.”

Governor Murphy established the New Jersey AI Task Force through Executive Order No. 346. Its purpose is to analyze AI's societal impacts and prepare recommendations for ethical use.

This survey follows a comprehensive assessment of public-sector employees’ knowledge and attitudes toward AI. Insights from that engagement informed recent training for state workers coinciding with launching NJ AI Assistant—a platform designed for improving government services responsibly using generative AI.
