Governor Phil Murphy has appointed George Samir Helmy to the United States Senate, filling the vacancy left by Senator Robert Menendez's resignation. Helmy will serve until the November General Election winner is certified on November 27, after which he will resign and the Governor will appoint the election winner.
Governor Murphy expressed confidence in Helmy's capabilities, stating, "It is an honor to appoint George Helmy, a proven public servant who deeply understands the complexities of Congress, to the United States Senate." He added that Helmy embodies integrity and commitment to serving New Jerseyans.
Helmy accepted the appointment with humility and determination. "I thank the Governor and accept this appointment with great humility and even greater determination to represent New Jerseyans in the United States Senate," he said. Helmy pledged to step down early for a smooth transition for his successor.
Helmy previously served as Chief of Staff to Governor Murphy from February 2019 to October 2023. His experience includes roles with U.S. Senator Cory Booker and work in both public service and private sector positions.
In other news, Moody's Investors Service upgraded New Jersey's outlook from stable to positive. The agency noted strong economic performance and larger budget surpluses as key factors. Governor Murphy welcomed this development as evidence of effective fiscal strategies.
Additionally, Governor Murphy announced initiatives aimed at improving literacy rates among New Jersey schoolchildren. Legislation signed into law focuses on foundational literacy instruction and professional development for educators.
A transit fare holiday was also announced by Governor Murphy for NJ TRANSIT customers from August 26 through September 2, offering free rides across all modes of transportation. This initiative aims to thank loyal customers amid recent service disruptions.
First Lady Tammy Murphy revealed appointments within the Maternal and Infant Health Innovation Authority (MIHIA) Board. Barbara George Johnson was named Chair, while Kaitlan Baston was appointed Vice Chair. Both are expected to lead efforts in improving maternal and infant health outcomes in New Jersey.
