Governor Phil Murphy has announced a significant initiative to alleviate medical debt for thousands of New Jersey residents. The state is utilizing over $550,000 from the American Rescue Plan and collaborating with Undue Medical Debt to provide relief. This effort will benefit 17,905 residents who owed $61.6 million to Prime Healthcare hospitals and an additional 31,748 individuals with debts exceeding $38.4 million through secondary markets like collection agencies. Governor Murphy emphasized the importance of focusing on health rather than financial burdens during illness.
“When someone is sick or injured, they should be able to focus on what matters most – getting better – rather than worrying about how they will pay for the life-saving care and services rendered to them,” stated Governor Murphy. He added that this initiative aims to make healthcare more affordable and accessible in New Jersey.
This development follows the enactment of the Louisa Carman Medical Debt Relief Act, which protects families from accumulating medical debt and prohibits its reporting to credit agencies. New Jersey remains at the forefront of consumer protection policies related to medical debt.
In another health-related initiative, First Lady Suzanne S. Youngkin has partnered with First Lady Tammy Murphy of New Jersey in a campaign against the fentanyl crisis on National Fentanyl Prevention and Awareness Day. The collaboration involves numerous First Spouses across the nation working together to raise awareness about synthetic opioids like fentanyl.
"On average, five Virginians die every day as a result of fentanyl overdose - an unspeakable tragedy that is entirely preventable," said First Lady Youngkin. She stressed the need for education on this issue.
The response includes actions such as flying flags at half-staff and lighting buildings in purple to honor lives lost due to overdoses. First Lady Murphy expressed her commitment by saying, "The Fentanyl epidemic has tragically affected families across America.”
Additionally, Governor Murphy will be speaking at the 2024 Governor's Conference on Housing and Economic Development in Atlantic City on September 17-18. The conference will gather leaders from various sectors to discuss solutions for housing and economic challenges in New Jersey.
“One of our Administration’s top priorities has been to establish New Jersey as a national leader in expanding affordable housing and strengthening economic development,” remarked Governor Murphy regarding his participation in the event.
