Governor Phil Murphy announced that New Jersey's application has been selected by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to receive $15 million in funding. This funding aims to enhance climate change preparedness and provide relief to homeowners after storms. New Jersey will contribute a 10% match, approximately $1.5 million, as part of this award.
The selection is part of FEMA’s Safeguarding Tomorrow Revolving Loan Fund (RLF) program, which offers low-interest loans to local governments for hazard mitigation and resilience infrastructure needs. These funds target areas most in need, including low-income and underserved communities.
"This award is essential to ensuring that our local communities have the tools they need to get ahead of the next disaster," said Governor Murphy. He emphasized the importance of resources for addressing storm intensity and sea-level rise due to climate change.
The Safeguarding Tomorrow through Ongoing Risk Mitigation (STORM) Act established this revolving loan fund to finance projects reducing risks from natural hazards and disasters. The program empowers states and other entities to make funding decisions directly.
In related news, the Murphy Administration released reports on health care affordability in New Jersey. These reports highlight ongoing challenges faced by residents regarding affordable health care access. Recent legislation has been enacted to protect consumers from medical debt and support initiatives like Get Covered New Jersey, Medicaid benefits enhancement, prescription drug affordability, and assistance for low-income seniors.
"We’ve taken critical steps toward addressing the rising cost of health care in New Jersey," said Governor Murphy, stressing the urgency for continued progress in making high-quality health care more affordable.
To mark Climate Week, the Department of Environmental Protection launched the Ready to Be Resilient Stormwater and Resilience Funding Program with $20 million from the American Rescue Plan. This initiative focuses on modernizing stormwater infrastructure amid increased precipitation due to climate change.
Governor Murphy stated that "Helping our local communities modernize infrastructure and get ahead of the next storm is key." Environmental Protection Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette noted that "precipitation is becoming more intense" due to climate change.
Additionally, the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) announced a statewide Roadway Safety Public Awareness Program aimed at curbing dangerous driving behaviors. This initiative seeks to promote safety among motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and people with mobility needs through various media platforms.
Governor Murphy remarked on unsafe driving behaviors' consequences: "Too many motorists have developed bad habits behind the wheel – and that is costing lives." NJDOT Commissioner Fran O’Connor highlighted that creating an emotional connection could encourage behavior change: "We want safety to become a way of life."
