Governor Phil Murphy, Lieutenant Governor Tahesha Way, and Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman have officially launched New Jersey's commemoration of America's 250th anniversary. The launch event took place at Monmouth Battlefield State Park and marks the beginning of a series of events and projects that will run through the nation's semiquincentennial from 2026 to 2033.
Governor Murphy highlighted New Jersey's role in American history, stating, "New Jersey is not just home to revolutionary history—we are, to this day, the birthplace for revolutionary possibilities." He emphasized the state's leadership in various sectors such as clean energy and artificial intelligence.
Lieutenant Governor Way expressed her enthusiasm for celebrating the country's diverse history, much of which has roots in New Jersey. "This shared legacy reflects our resilience and strength as united Americans," she said.
Congresswoman Bonnie Watson Coleman noted the historical significance of New Jersey during the Revolutionary War. "The Battle of Monmouth was a vital turning point to winning our nation's independence nearly 250 years ago," she stated.
The event featured musical performances by Washington Crossing Fifes and Drums, a Pledge of Allegiance led by a local student, and other ceremonial activities. Senator Cory Booker also attended, noting that preserving historic war sites helps keep national stories alive.
RevolutionNJ will lead this initiative in partnership with America250. The organization plans to engage both locals and visitors with programming designed to highlight New Jersey’s critical role in American history. Rosie Rios, Chair of America250, acknowledged New Jersey's pivotal part as one of the original colonies in marking this milestone.
In addition to cultural events like Tavern Talks and educational programs such as History Happened Here, RevolutionNJ is preparing for a marquee celebration on July 4, 2026. This celebration aims to commemorate America's founding ideals while showcasing New Jersey's contributions during the Revolutionary War.
Shawn M. LaTourette from the NJ Department of Environmental Protection announced enhancements at historic sites across New Jersey as part of Governor Murphy's investment plan. These include developments at Washington Crossing State Park aimed at attracting visitors during the Semiquincentennial celebrations.
State Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio highlighted this anniversary as an opportunity to celebrate what unifies Americans while acknowledging New Jersey’s unique history. Diane Waugh Oliver from The New Jersey State Society Daughters of the American Revolution mentioned collaborative initiatives involving cataloging historical figures who fought within New Jersey during the revolution.
