New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy recently participated in a roundtable discussion with the Association of British HealthTech Industries (ABHI) and its member companies. This event was part of the Choose New Jersey governor-led economic mission to the United Kingdom, aiming to strengthen ties between New Jersey and British partners in life sciences and HealthTech sectors.
Governor Murphy engaged with UK HealthTech companies and clinical leaders during the roundtable to explore growth opportunities within this sector. ABHI played a key role through its U.S. Accelerator program, which aids UK HealthTech companies entering the U.S. market.
"New Jersey is committed to fostering global partnerships that drive innovation and economic growth," said Governor Murphy. "Collaborating with ABHI and UK HealthTech leaders presents a unique opportunity to strengthen our state's leadership in Life Sciences and HealthTech."
The foundation for this partnership was laid during a September visit by an ABHI cohort to New Jersey, involving engagements across leading healthcare and research institutions such as Liberty Science Center's SciTech Scity, Hackensack Meridian Health, Rutgers University, and Rowan University. These interactions helped shape plans for an ABHI-led economic delegation visit to New Jersey in April 2025.
"The collaboration between the UK and New Jersey is only beginning," said Paul Benton, Managing Director, International at ABHI. "With our U.S. Accelerator planning a delegation to New Jersey in 2025, this is a fantastic opportunity for UK business leaders."
Prominent clinical leaders from London institutions like UCL Partners, Imperial College London, Barts Health NHS Trust, and Howard de Walden Estate attended the UK roundtable.
Mark Kildea of The Howard de Walden Estate remarked on London's healthcare capabilities: "Investment, trade, and sharing of best practices are critical... it is with great pleasure that we collaborate with our friends in New Jersey."
New Jersey's life sciences sector employs over 105,000 people across pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, and medical device manufacturing as of 2020. The state hosts approximately 4,300 life sciences establishments.
"New Jersey's partnership with ABHI is a testament to our commitment," said Wes Mathews of Choose New Jersey. "We look forward to welcoming ABHI's trade delegation in 2025."
