Governor Phil Murphy has announced that New Jersey has invested over $1 billion in expanding access to affordable, high-quality child care since the start of his administration. An additional $17 million will be allocated to the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) Child Care Facilities Improvement Program, raising the state's total investment in child care infrastructure to over $140 million.
The NJEDA's program offers grants up to $200,000 for eligible child care providers to enhance early childhood learning environments. So far, $85 million has been approved for more than 400 centers, enrolling over 34,000 children and employing over 8,500 staff. With new funding, an estimated 200 more centers will receive awards.
Governor Murphy stated that "affordable, exceptional child care is a vital part of a stronger and fairer New Jersey economy." He acknowledged the Biden-Harris Administration for providing significant federal funding for expanding resources in New Jersey.
First Lady Tammy Murphy emphasized the importance of high-quality child care as part of the Nurture NJ initiative. The improvements are seen as steps toward making New Jersey a top state for raising families.
The new funds come from the Federal American Rescue Plan State Fiscal Recovery Fund. The NJEDA aims to approve all eligible applicants from Phase One of its program. The focus is on expanding capacity at centers for infants and toddlers.
Tim Sullivan, CEO of NJEDA, highlighted the importance of reliable child care services for economic growth. Congresswoman LaMonica McIver called Governor Murphy’s investment smart economic policy that empowers parents and supports children's early learning experiences.
Jorroys Reyes-Moton from Kids Palace II expressed gratitude for grant support that enabled service expansion. Human Services Commissioner Sarah Adelman noted that this investment complements other financial support measures for child care providers and families.
Christine Norbut Beyer from the Department of Children and Families praised ongoing investments in family stability and success. Mary E. Coogan from Advocates for Children of New Jersey emphasized that these facilities foster lifelong learning.
Peg Kinsell from SPAN Parent Advocacy Network celebrated progress towards ensuring quality child care access. Sharon Roseboro from NJPTA appreciated Governor Murphy's commitment to improving the sector's quality and affordability.
Jennifer S. Higgins from AFT New Jersey applauded the administration’s investment in early childhood education, predicting substantial returns on this financial commitment based on research by Advocates for Children of New Jersey.
