Governor Phil Murphy has enacted the Freedom to Read Act, a measure designed to prevent arbitrary book bans and ensure free access to age-appropriate books in New Jersey schools and public libraries. The bill was signed at the Princeton Public Library with advocates for intellectual freedom and legislative sponsors present.
"The Freedom to Read Act cements New Jersey’s role on the forefront of preventing book bans and protecting the intellectual freedom of our educators and students," stated Governor Murphy. He emphasized the importance of reading freely as a preparation for future generations.
The law mandates local school boards and library governing bodies to develop policies for selecting and removing library materials, supported by entities such as the Department of Education, State Librarian, New Jersey Association of School Librarians, and New Jersey School Boards Association. It also shields library staff from civil or criminal liability when complying with these regulations.
In another development, New Jersey has surpassed 200,000 electric vehicle registrations. This achievement reflects growing consumer confidence in electric vehicles (EVs) and charging infrastructure under Governor Murphy's administration. "New Jersey is leading the charge in transitioning toward a zero-emission future," said Governor Murphy. The state has more than doubled its EV registrations over two years.
Governor Murphy announced Kris Kolluri as the new President and CEO of NJ TRANSIT following Kevin Corbett's resignation. Kolluri will assume his role after January 15th, 2025. The NJ TRANSIT Board confirmed this nomination unanimously during their recent meeting.
"Kris Kolluri has played a vital role in strengthening our region’s transit infrastructure," noted Governor Murphy. Kolluri expressed gratitude for his appointment: "I am honored that Governor Murphy has recommended me to be the President and Chief Executive Officer."
