Governor Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 372, mandating that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff from December 13 to December 15, 2024. This gesture honors the late Mildred Coleman Crump, a former Newark City Council President who passed away on December 1, 2024, at the age of 86.
Mildred Crump's career was marked by significant achievements in public service. She moved to New Jersey with her husband Cecil Crump in 1965 and became the state's first Black Braille teacher before entering politics. In 1994, she was elected to the Newark City Council as its first Black female member. Her historic ascent continued in 2006 when she became the first woman to serve as President of the Newark City Council, a position she held for over ten years.
During her tenure, Crump was known for her dedication to advocating for vulnerable groups including women, children, senior citizens, families, and residents with disabilities throughout Newark. Her leadership extended beyond governmental duties as she remained committed to uplifting her community and contributing positively to the State of New Jersey.
Governor Murphy remarked on her legacy: “Former Council President Mildred Crump was a public servant renowned for her tenacity, kindness, and integrity. Mildred advocated to protect the most vulnerable residents within her community. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her loved ones and express our gratitude for her years of dedicated service.”
Crump is survived by her sister Jean Abernathy Smith; son Cecil Lawrence “Larry” Crump; daughter Sheri E. “Sage” Crump; and grandchildren.
