Governor Phil Murphy has announced the resignation of NJ TRANSIT President and CEO Kevin Corbett. Corbett, who has served for seven years, will transition to a new role in academia. His tenure marks him as the third longest-serving CEO in NJ TRANSIT's history.
Appointed by Governor Murphy in 2018, Corbett has been instrumental in enhancing New Jersey's mass transit system. His leadership saw improvements such as better customer service, modernized infrastructure, expanded stations, and new rail car fleets.
Significant achievements under Corbett include the full implementation of Positive Train Control (PTC), progress on the Portal North Bridge replacement project, introduction of electric buses, restoration of locomotive engineers and bus operators ranks, and execution of a five-year Capital Plan. NJ TRANSIT also received recognition from the American Public Transportation Association as “North America’s Most Outstanding Public Transportation System.”
Governor Murphy commented on Corbett's contributions: “As the most densely populated state...New Jersey disproportionately depends on mass transit...Kevin has worked in coordination with our federal government...to develop strategic plans...His leadership and service to the people of New Jersey has been unwavering.”
Corbett expressed gratitude for his role: “Serving as President & CEO of NJ TRANSIT has been the honor of a lifetime...I am profoundly grateful for the trust Governor Murphy placed in me...While I am excited about this next chapter...my commitment to public transit and the communities we serve remains steadfast.”
Francis O’Connor, DOT Commissioner and Chair of NJ TRANSIT’s Board of Directors praised Corbett’s efforts: “Kevin has worked tirelessly over the last seven years transforming NJ TRANSIT’s long-term capital plan into one that will continue to deliver on moving the agency forward for years to come.”
NJ TRANSIT successfully managed transportation for major events like Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour at MetLife Stadium and proved its capability for hosting global events such as FIFA World Cup 2026.
Corbett's resignation is effective January 15, 2025. A successor announcement is forthcoming.
