TRENTON — Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, the Division of Criminal Justice (DCJ), and the New Jersey State Police have revealed the outcome of a recent operation that took place in Cumberland County, resulting in the rescue of more than 100 dogs and the arrest of eight individuals involved in a dogfighting network.

The joint effort by law enforcement agencies led to the discovery of the illegal activities at a Cumberland County compound and two other related locations, including a residence in Atlantic County. The operation involved the rescue of over 100 dogs that were being bred and trained for fighting, with veterinarians from the Humane Society of the United States providing necessary care for the animals.

Attorney General Platkin condemned the cruel practice of dogfighting, stating, "Profiting from dogfighting is callous, brutal, and cruel." Director Ferketic of the Division of Criminal Justice emphasized the commitment to protecting animals and communities from such activities, calling it a "horrific activity."

Colonel Callahan of the New Jersey State Police highlighted the significance of dismantling a culture of cruelty through the operation, stating, “Dismantling a dog fighting ring is not just about rescuing animals; it’s about dismantling a culture of cruelty and restoring compassion to our communities.”

Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Robinson from the Department of Agriculture Office of Inspector General expressed the agency's stance against animal cruelty, stating, “The barbaric practice of pitting animals against each other in a fight to the death has no place in this country.”

Janette Reever from the Humane Society of the United States reflected on the suffering endured by the dogs involved in dogfighting, contrasting it with their affectionate nature, saying, “What’s striking is the level of suffering involved in dogfighting contrasted with how sweet and eager for affection these dogs are.”

The arrests included Bruce “Hollywood” Low, Jr., and seven other defendants, with charges ranging from racketeering to animal cruelty. The defendants have been charged with serious offenses related to their involvement in the dogfighting network, with the case being prosecuted by Deputy Attorney General Heather Hausleben.

The collaborative effort of multiple agencies in uncovering and addressing this organized crime enterprise demonstrates a firm stance against animal cruelty and illegal activities. The defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court, as the legal proceedings continue to unfold.
