TRENTON – A state grand jury has decided not to file criminal charges against Officer LaQuan Jett of the Pemberton Township Police Department in connection with the fatal crash that resulted in the death of John R. Nutt on April 20, 2023, in Pemberton, New Jersey.

The investigation report stated that the crash occurred in Pemberton at around 5:02 p.m. on April 20, 2023. It was mentioned that the incident unfolded after the police received a 911 call accusing Mr. Nutt of motorcycle theft.

The State Grand Jury's decision was reached after a thorough examination of witness interviews, photographs, video footage, and autopsy results from the medical examiner. The grand jury concluded its deliberations on April 1, 2024, voting against filing criminal charges against Officer Jett.

The collision took place near the intersection of County Route 687 West and Davis Street in Pemberton, leading to Mr. Nutt's tragic death and causing serious injuries to a passenger who was later released from the hospital after being airlifted to Cooper University Hospital.

The Attorney General's Office, mandated by N.J.S.A. 52:17B-107(a)(2), conducted an investigation into the incident, as required for deaths occurring during encounters with law enforcement officers. The process involved presenting all the evidence to a grand jury to determine the need for criminal charges against the officers involved.

Furthermore, the Independent Prosecutor Directive and standard operating procedures were followed diligently, ensuring transparency and neutrality throughout the investigation and grand jury presentation process.

In adherence to established protocols, the Office of Public Integrity and Accountability will now oversee any administrative review of Officer Jett by the appropriate law enforcement agency, as part of the post-investigation procedures.

The Independent Prosecutor Directive and the standard operating procedures for grand jury presentations are publicly available on the Attorney General's website, emphasizing the commitment to accountability and transparency in handling cases of fatal police encounters.
