Governor Phil Murphy has commended the New Jersey Senate for confirming 12 new Superior Court judges, a move that has reduced the number of vacancies to under 40 for the first time since 2019. The newly confirmed judges include six in Bergen County and four in Passaic County.
Governor Murphy expressed his appreciation, stating, "Since taking office, my Administration has vigorously worked to fill judicial vacancies with individuals who demonstrate the credentials and impartiality required of a Superior Court Judge, while reflecting the diversity of our state."
Senate President Nick Scutari also praised the confirmation, emphasizing the Senate's commitment to maintaining a standard of excellence in the judiciary. He stated, "The Senate takes its constitutional responsibility of advice and consent seriously and has worked diligently with the Governor’s Office to ensure that we maintain a standard of excellence for the men and women responsible for administering justice in our courtrooms."
Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Brian Stack, highlighted the committee's effort in appointing the most qualified judges to address the vacancy crisis. He expressed his optimism for closing the judge vacancy gap in New Jersey to reduce delays in cases and address the court system's backlog.
The New Jersey State Bar Association President, Timothy F. McGoughran, also lauded the appointments, stating, "Reducing vacancies to a rate not seen since 2019 will help ensure the residents and businesses that live and operate in this great state can have their matters addressed without unnecessary delay. This is a good day for our justice system and the people of New Jersey."
The confirmation of these 12 new Superior Court judges reflects the commitment of the Murphy Administration and the Senate to appointing highly qualified individuals to serve in New Jersey's judiciary, ensuring fairness, diversity, and efficiency in the state's legal system.
