Marlo DeSimone, a junior majoring in mechanical engineering at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), has been named the recipient of the Deloitte Foundation Society of Women Engineers Scholarship. The $10,000 scholarship is awarded to young women who are dedicated to building careers in engineering.
“This recognition reinforces my confidence as an aspiring engineer and inspires me to keep pursuing opportunities that challenge and empower me,” DeSimone said.
DeSimone developed an interest in building and problem-solving from a young age. She decided to attend TCNJ after a campus visit during her junior year of high school, citing the college’s low student-to-faculty ratio and early hands-on learning opportunities as key factors in her decision. “The small student-to-faculty ratio stood out to me, along with the opportunity to get hands-on experience in the machine shop as early as my freshman and sophomore years,” she said. “It made TCNJ feel like a place where I could really learn, grow, and be supported.”
Last summer, DeSimone interned as an assistant project manager at Alaimo Group, an engineering firm based in New Jersey. At TCNJ, she serves as vice president of the college’s chapter of the Society of Women Engineers and participates in its leadership development program. In addition, she works as a student manager for residential operations in the campus mailroom.
DeSimone acknowledged the support she has received from faculty members throughout her studies, particularly from mechanical engineering professor Jennifer Wang. Wang wrote her a letter of recommendation for the scholarship application. “The guidance and encouragement from my professors have helped me gain confidence in my abilities,” DeSimone said. “They push me to take on new challenges.”
After graduation, DeSimone plans to pursue a career in construction management.
