The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) has announced a collaboration with the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City to provide online graduate courses. These courses will be part of the museum’s Seminars on Science series.

The courses aim to enhance students’ understanding of scientific content and inquiry. They are offered asynchronously, allowing students flexibility in completing assignments.

“The partnership with the American Museum of Natural History, an institution globally recognized for its groundbreaking research and educational excellence, brings students unparalleled opportunities to engage with innovative scientific scholarship,” stated Megan Gordon, director of continuing education and external partnerships at TCNJ. She added that this collaboration would enrich the academic experience for students on their Ewing campus and those worldwide through TCNJ’s Off-Site and Online Programs.

The program is available year-round and includes various learning materials such as case studies, textbook readings, videos, interactive simulations, image galleries, and discussions. These resources connect students with museum scientists, laboratories, expeditions, and specimens.

Lauren Madden, a professor at TCNJ and coordinator of environmental sustainability education initiatives, commented on the benefits: “TCNJ students who take these courses will have opportunities to engage with cutting-edge science and world-recognized scientists. In turn, they’ll have a chance to bring this innovative science to their classrooms and schools, magnifying the impact of their work.”

Robert Steiner from AMNH expressed enthusiasm about the partnership: “We’re thrilled to welcome The College of New Jersey as a new partner in AMNH’s Seminars on Science program.” He emphasized that TCNJ’s dedication to teacher preparation aligns well with expanding access to research-based science learning for educators.

Each course involves instruction by both a museum educator and a research scientist following the Next Generation Science Standards. Additionally, these courses can serve as electives for various graduate programs at TCNJ.
