The TCNJ men’s swimming team, ranked ninth nationally, achieved a comprehensive victory over Swarthmore in their recent meet. The Lions secured first place in every event, demonstrating their current form following their entry into the season’s top ten rankings.
Joe McChesney was a standout performer for TCNJ, setting a new program record with a 22.25-second finish in the 50 butterfly. This time is now the fastest in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) and ranks as the 11th fastest in Division III competition. McChesney also improved his previous NCAA Division III B-cut time in the 100 butterfly by recording a 48.21-second swim, shaving five hundredths of a second off his earlier mark.
The meet opened with TCNJ’s A and B relay teams taking first and second place in the 200 medley relay. Gavin Formon and Will Heinze finished first and second respectively in the 1000 freestyle. In subsequent events, Gabe Beverini took first place in the 200 freestyle, while Derin Ozbas finished third. Andrew Kidchob won the 50 backstroke, with Gavin Patrick placing third.
TCNJ continued to secure top spots throughout the meet: Tyler McGeehan and Dylan Negron claimed first and second places in the 50 breaststroke; McChesney and Pablo Salazar were first and second in the 100 butterfly.
M.J. Hoban won both the 50 freestyle (20.75 seconds) and the 100 freestyle (46.13 seconds). Kidchob added another win for TCNJ with his performance in the 100 backstroke, while McGeehan led a sweep of the top three positions for TCNJ in the 100 breaststroke with his winning time of 55.92 seconds.
Formon secured another individual win for TCNJ in the 500 freestyle, finishing at 4:41.34. Beverini closed out individual events by winning the 200 individual medley (1:53.90). The final event saw TCNJ’s A relay team victorious again in the 200 freestyle relay.
The Lions will next compete against Montclair State on January 24 during their senior day meet.
