The TCNJ men’s soccer team has been named the dark horse in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Preseason Coaches’ Poll, according to an announcement from the league office.
Rowan University was ranked first in the poll, earning all eight possible first-place votes after winning its second NJAC Championship in three years. Montclair State received one first-place vote and took the second spot, followed by Stockton in third. The Lions are ranked eighth but have been identified as the team most likely to surpass expectations this season under new head coach Steve DeMatteo.
Senior midfielder J.J. Zaun will serve as captain for TCNJ’s roster, which features key returning scorers Matias Hornos—who recorded five goals and four assists last season—and Chris Meder, who added two goals and three assists. Massimo Rodio is also among the experienced returnees. The squad will integrate nine newcomers this fall, including freshmen Aidan Grund, Matt Will, Manny Thacher, and sophomore Lawrence Mancino.
DeMatteo expressed optimism about the upcoming campaign: “We’re excited for the season to start and to continue building on where we left off this past spring,” he said. “There’s a great energy and motivation within the team right now as we get ready to compete. We’re looking forward to blending what we feel is a strong incoming class with an experienced and driven group of returning players to make for a competitive and dynamic squad.”
The Lions will begin their season at home on Friday, August 29 against Immaculata. Their non-conference schedule includes games with several teams that achieved at least 10 wins last year: Penn State Harrisburg, Arcadia, DeSales, as well as nationally ranked #21 Stevens. Conference play opens against Kean on Saturday, September 27.
