The TCNJ baseball team won its first home game of the season against Widener on March 25, securing a narrow 7-6 victory after coming from behind.
The result marks an important start to the Lions’ home schedule, as they improved their record to 8-10 while Widener fell to 7-10. The game saw contributions from several players and featured nine different pitchers for TCNJ.
Widener took an early lead in the second inning, but TCNJ responded in the third when Antonio Destribats drew a walk and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Brian Lovaglio. Bodhi Lettieri delivered an efficient fourth inning, retiring three batters on just eight pitches. Although Widener regained the lead in the fifth, TCNJ answered with three runs in the sixth inning. Michael Contiliano started off with a single, followed by Tyler Provost reaching base after being hit by a pitch. Jake Carter doubled down the left-field line to score Contiliano and later crossed home plate himself after Joe Tammaro’s grounder gave TCNJ a one-run advantage.
In the eighth inning, after Widener tied up the game again, TCNJ responded with another three-run surge. Braden Dromboski reached second base thanks to a single and wild pitch before being driven in by Tammaro’s single. Lovaglio then brought two more runners home with another key hit.
Widener made things close in the ninth by loading the bases and narrowing TCNJ’s lead to one run before Jalen Maharaja closed out the win by forcing a ground ball that ended with an unassisted force at third base from freshman Joe Tammaro.
Jake Carter went two-for-four at bat with one run batted in and one run scored while Lettieri pitched one inning without allowing any hits or earned runs.
Looking ahead, TCNJ is scheduled for another home game on Thursday, March 26 against Haverford at 3:30 PM.
