The Supreme Court of the United States has agreed to hear oral arguments in a case challenging the Trump Administration’s efforts to end birthright citizenship. New Jersey Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin, who is co-leading a coalition of several states, including California and Massachusetts, against the measure, issued a statement on the decision.
Attorney General Platkin described the attempt to terminate birthright citizenship as “blatantly unconstitutional,” noting that previous courts have consistently rejected the Trump Administration’s legal arguments. “We fought to prevent this unlawful order from stripping American citizenship from hundreds of thousands of Americans born across this country,” Platkin stated.
He emphasized the historical foundations of birthright citizenship, noting that it was “enshrined in the Constitution in the wake of the Civil War” and is supported by “a long line of Supreme Court precedent.” Platkin also asserted that citizenship rights should not be subject to change by the will of an individual, referencing past and present attempts to alter these fundamental rights.
The oral arguments are scheduled to be presented to the Supreme Court in May.
