The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) has recently named Peter Schiffer, Princeton University's dean for research, as one of its 471 new lifetime fellows. This recognition is also extended to 17 alumni of Princeton, both undergraduate and graduate.
The AAAS honored their new fellows by stating that the designation "honors members whose efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications in service to society have distinguished them among their peers and colleagues."
Peter Schiffer, alongside his role as the dean for research, also serves as the vice president for the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory and holds the title of Class of 1909 Professor of Physics at Princeton. Schiffer completed his B.S. in physics at Yale University in 1988 and his Ph.D. at Stanford University in 1993 under the supervision of Douglas Osheroff, the 1996 Nobel laureate in physics. Throughout his career, Schiffer has published over 200 peer-reviewed papers and guided over 20 doctoral students and numerous undergraduates in research. His work has received funding from agencies including the National Science Foundation, Department of Energy, NASA, DARPA, and the Army Research Office.
Among the Princeton alumni recognized this year are Amy H. Andreotti from Iowa State University, a 1994 Ph.D. alumnus in chemistry, and Susan L. Brantley from The Pennsylvania State University, associated with Princeton's Class of 1980 in chemistry and a 1987 Ph.D. graduate in geological and geophysical sciences.
Other notable alumni include Lauren Averett Byers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, Troy Alan Carter from Oak Ridge National Laboratory and UCLA, Fred Chang from the University of California-San Francisco, and Yong P. Chen from Purdue University and Aarhus University of Denmark.
Additional Princetonians honored are George Cybenko from Dartmouth College, Robert L. Klitzman from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, Richard J. Krauzlis from the National Eye Institute of the National Institutes of Health, and Venkataraman Lakshmi from the University of Virginia.
The list continues with Emily R. Liman from the University of Southern California, Jonathan C. Mattingly from Duke University, Krishnaswamy Nandakumar from Louisiana State University, Ilya Nemenman from Emory University, Robin Patel from the Mayo Clinic, Cynthia Rudin from Duke University, and David P. Saltzberg from UCLA.
