Governor Phil Murphy has expressed his sorrow over the death of Congressman Donald Payne, Jr., describing him as a "steadfast champion for the people of New Jersey." Governor Murphy highlighted Payne's dedication to public service and his understanding of working families' struggles, stemming from his background as a union worker and toll collector.
Murphy recalled Payne's early political career as Newark City Council President and on the Essex County Board of Commissioners. He noted that Payne's commitment continued through more than ten years in Congress. The governor emphasized their collaborative efforts to strengthen New Jersey, aiming to honor the legacy of service established by the Payne family.
Governor Murphy remarked on Payne's contributions to Newark, including access to safe drinking water and job creation for labor workers. He also extended condolences to Payne's wife Beatrice and their children, Donald III, Jack, and Yvonne.
"Donald’s love will live on in the homes of his neighbors in Newark," Murphy stated. "Our heartfelt prayers are with his family during this difficult time."
