Governor Phil Murphy has signed Executive Order No. 357, mandating that U.S. and New Jersey flags be flown at half-staff on May 1 and May 2. This gesture honors the memory of Congressman Donald Payne, Jr., who passed away at the age of 65 on April 24. The services to commemorate his life will take place on these dates.
Congressman Payne, born and raised in Newark, served as the U.S. Representative for New Jersey's 10th Congressional District since 2012. He is survived by his wife Beatrice and their three children: Donald III, Jack, and Yvonne.
Governor Murphy praised Congressman Payne's contributions, stating, "Congressman Payne leaves behind a remarkable legacy of leadership and principled public service." He noted that Payne was a dedicated advocate for working families in New Jersey and played a significant role in advancing public health, safety, and infrastructure during his tenure.
"As Tammy and I mourn the loss of our dear friend," Governor Murphy added, "we are keeping Beatrice, their children, and all who knew and loved Congressman Payne in our prayers."
