Throughout March, The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) will host a series of events in celebration of Women's History Month. Among the notable speakers is activist and gun control advocate X González, who will deliver a speech on Wednesday, March 20 at 6 p.m. in the Mayo Concert Hall.
González, a survivor of the 2018 school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, co-founded the March for Our Lives Movement. They are recognized for their advocacy work in gun violence prevention, LGBTQ+ rights protection, and environmental protection.
The event lineup also includes ALOK on Monday, March 4 at 4 p.m., also in the Mayo Concert Hall. ALOK is known internationally as a poet, comedian, public speaker, and actor. They have authored works such as "Femme in Public," "Beyond the Gender Binary," and "Your Wound/My Garden." ALOK is also behind #DeGenderFashion: an initiative aimed at removing gender norms from fashion and beauty industries.
Another highlight is Joan Morgan's presentation on Tuesday, March 5 at 7 p.m. in the Intercultural Center at Roscoe West Hall. Morgan is an award-winning journalist and cultural critic credited with coining the term “hip-hop feminism” through her book "When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost." She has appeared on platforms like MTV and CNN to discuss hip-hop's intersection with gender issues.
