Anne Farrell and Laura Bruno, faculty members at The College of New Jersey's School of Nursing and Health Sciences, have released a new children's book titled "Move and Learn: Let’s Jump." This publication is the first in a series aimed at promoting physical activity among elementary school-aged children.
"We are health and physical education teachers by trade and we recognize there is a need for books that encourage students to move," Farrell stated. She highlighted the decline in children's physical activity over the past decade as a key motivation for the series.
The book introduces characters Active Annie and Lively Laura, modeled after the authors themselves. It aligns with psychomotor, cognitive, and affective educational goals by teaching skills through practice and peer encouragement. "In this first book, the girls learn the appropriate form for jumping and they go out and practice that skill," Bruno explained. The narrative emphasizes supporting peers who struggle with new skills.
Bruno also addressed concerns about technology reducing children's physical activity levels. "The use of these devices has a significant impact on the activity level of children," she said, noting broader effects on competence and confidence in other life areas.
The journey from concept to publication was educational for both authors. They are considering future projects such as an animated series featuring their characters. "Bringing the content to the project came very naturally to us — it’s what we do every day," Farrell remarked about their experience with illustration challenges.
"Move and Learn: Let’s Jump" is available on Amazon, where it has reached best-seller status in its category.
