The publication Diverse: Issues In Higher Education has recognized Winnifred Brown-Glaude, a professor of African American studies and sociology, by including her in its list of 40 Outstanding Women in Higher Education. This accolade highlights women who are paving the way for future female leaders.
The editorial team at Diverse selected the honorees based on their perseverance, tenacity, and significant impact on academia and beyond. "I am honored to be included in the 2024 class of leading women in higher education," said Brown-Glaude. She expressed gratitude for the recognition, noting that it inspires her to continue striving for inclusive excellence at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ).
Brown-Glaude played a crucial role as former chair of TCNJ's African American studies department in establishing an official major in the subject. While the college had offered a minor since 1972, the major was introduced in 2016 under her leadership.
Her research focuses on race and ethnicity in the Anglophone Caribbean, race, gender, informal economies, and gender and globalization. Brown-Glaude has authored several articles and books, including "Doing Diversity in Higher Education: Faculty Leaders Share Challenges and Strategies" and "The Toni Morrison Book Club," co-written with three TCNJ colleagues.
She holds a PhD in sociology from Temple University.
