Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced a leadership change at the Division of Law (DOL). Michael T.G. Long, who has served as Director, will return to private practice. Deputy Director Michael C. Walters is set to take over as Acting DOL Director starting December 12.
Platkin expressed gratitude for Long's service, stating, "For nearly two-and-a-half years, I have had the privilege of working with Mike Long by my side overseeing our Division of Law." He praised Long's leadership and personal qualities: "In addition to being one of the finest lawyers I’ve ever worked with, he’s an even better person and colleague."
Platkin also commended Walters' capabilities: "I am also pleased that Mike Walters...will continue working on behalf of all New Jerseyans."
The DOL employs over 500 attorneys providing legal services across various sectors including banking, insurance, civil rights, and more. Under Long's leadership, several initiatives were launched such as an internal reorganization creating new deputy director positions and establishing a permanent Antitrust Litigation Section.
Long reflected positively on his tenure: “I have truly enjoyed working with the incredible public servants at the Division of Law.” He also expressed confidence in Walters' future leadership.
Walters thanked Platkin for this opportunity: “I know that by working together, we will continue to achieve tremendous results for the State.” Walters joined DOL in 1999 after clerking for The Honorable Myron H. Gottlieb and graduated from Rutgers School of Law in 1998.
